The Hollyhock House, located in the East Hollywood area of Los Angeles was designed by architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. It was his first Los Angeles commission and was constructed for the oil heiress, Aline Barnsdall. During this time, 1919-1921, Wright was also traveling to Japan where he was building the Imperial Hotel. He also designed the Jiyu Gakuen Girls’ School Myonichikan (Freedom School), attended by Kaishusama. Hollyhock House occupies the main area of Barnsdall Art Park and is owned by the City of Los Angeles and operated by the Department of Cultural Affairs. In July, 2019, Hollyhock House and seven other buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright during the 20th Century, were added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) World Heritage List. It was the first time modern American architecture has been recognized by that organization.
